Minolta Rokkor MC 58mm F1.4 is one of the most recognizable Minolta lenses. He is loved and well known by photographers, collectors, and lens-testers.

Testing methods description

  • Target: cityscape
  • Distance: > 200 meters to center focus point
  • Camera: Sony A7II (24mpx, full-frame, tripod, remote control). M-mode, ISO fixed, WB fixed, SteadyShot – OFF. The focus point is on the center only.
  • RAW processing: Capture One, default settings. All quality settings – 100%. Crops – 300×200 px

Testing methods description

  • Target: 10-15 cm picture, printed on glossy photo paper
  • Distance: 1.7m
  • Camera: Sony A7II (24mpx, full-frame, tripod, remote control). M-mode, ISO fixed, WB fixed, SteadyShot – OFF.
  • The test was repeated for every F-stop on every focus position with manual focus adjustment for each shot. That is to avoid the effect of field curvature.
  • RAW processing: Capture One, default settings. All quality settings – 100%. Crops – 300×200 px

Notes:

  • A slight color difference on the close distance test is because shootout has been performed at different times. It doesn’t affect the result.
  • I know that at least one serious collector is working on researching this lens model right this time, and if you read this article much later than it was published I recommend looking for other materials – it possible that another more detailed information is available.

I don’t see deviations between these two copies on both tests which are worth to be mentioned. They work like twins.
